Scientists at UC Berkeley have introduced Olo,a color humans have never naturally seen. It was created using a special system called Oz, which uses precise lasers to stimulate only M-cone cells in the retina—cells sensitive to green light. This unique activation produces a hyper‑saturated teal that lies outside normal human vision. Only a handful of people have experienced Olo in the lab, describing it as unlike any color before. It cannot be shown on screens, printed, or painted because it exists beyond our natural color gamut. While some experts debate whether Olo is truly new or just an extreme green, researchers say it opens exciting possibilities for vision science, color‑blindness research, and understanding how the brain creates the colors we see.
