We went on to do other things but when the sale notice went up we knew the time was right. If I see hogget on a menu I’m helpless. Line-caught Whitby cod turns up with steamed greens and a little pile of cockles – such a simple, beautifully executed dish which gives the fish star billing.

If they’re anything like the food, drinks, and service, I’m gonna be one happy guest. But it’s not just the grub that’s worth writing home about – the atmosphere is unbeatable too. The food was all served at the same time, hot and fresh, and I HAVE to give a special shout-out to their vegetarian lasagne – it was seriously out of this world!

Tastefully refurbished in May 2013 we have real ales fabulous food open fires accommodation friendly staff and stunning views. Wilson wears his considerable skills lightly, but this is assured, imaginative cooking with beautifully balanced flavours. Desserts don’t disappoint; an elegant sea buckthorn tart has a pop of colour, and something called simply “Strawberry” is so much more; sort of cheesecake, sort of mousse, sort of marvellous.

The mushrooms were spot on as well, with the garlic sauce tasty but not overpowering. The creamy cheese combined beautifully with the sweet cranberry. On ordering we were warned there might be a wait as it was a busy Saturday night but in no time at all our starters – a deep fried brie with a cranberry side and button mushrooms with a garlic dip – were on our plate. If you are ever driving on the roads of the North York Moors and spot people with cumbersome backpacks you might think they are walkers, campers or lovers of the great outdoors. Roaring wood fires throughout

One of them is The Tides In, which also has a lovely terrace overlooking the beach. The on-site restaurant prides itself on using locally-sourced produce in their menu and can accommodate any dietary requirements. The main attraction at Holkham Park is Holkham Hall, a Palladian-style building home to the Earl of Leicester and his family. The closest train station is at Sheringham almost 20 miles away, so it’s best to drive. Knaresborough is home to picturesque cobblestone streets, lovely tea rooms and attractions such as Knaresborough Castle. It is the perfect day trip from Leeds, as it is a 35 minute drive or a 45 minute train ride.

Other popular activities include cycling, rock climbing, paragliding (if the winds are high enough) and caving, as Castleton is home to three of the best show caves and caverns in the UK. It spans 555 square miles and is situated within five counties, Derbyshire, Cheshire, Staffordshire, Yorkshire and Greater Manchester. In fact, the Peak District is centrally located, which in turn makes it the most accessible National Park in the UK.

We don’t get the young crowds in, we get more families and couples – and often those who want a romantic meal a bit out of the way.” “We have seven real ales, with Old Peculier being our most popular, but it is an eating place that we are best known. Clearly this is not some quaint, small-time country inn serving a single guest ale and pie and peas. Barry has done quite a bit with the Lion in his time, so much so that although, from the outside, it still looks relatively under-developed, inside it now has three restaurants which, combined, have the capacity to seat 130.

It was rated by Condé Nast Traveller as one of the most beautiful restaurants in all of Scotland. The easiest route is from Oban – Craignure, but Tobermory is the island’s capital so the ferry from Kilchoan is best if you don’t drive. This cosy cottage offers modern amenities as well as being close to some amazing attractions and breathtaking views.
