Alongside all the blood groups known in the world so far—A, B, AB, O—scientists have now discovered a completely new blood type. And it is named ‘Gwada Negative’ or simply ‘G-Negative’ for short. It is so rare that it has only been found in one person so far—a 68-year-old French woman. The incident originated in 2011, when a routine blood test was being conducted before that woman’s surgery. But the test revealed that an unknown antibody was reacting in her body in a way which did not match with any other known blood groups. And after 15 years of comprehensive research, scientists finally confirmed that this was an entirely new blood group observed in a human body for the first time. The mystery of this blood goes even deeper. By going through advanced genome sequencing, it was discovered that a strange mutation had occurred in a gene called PIGZ, which led to the development of this unique and distinct blood type. And the strangest fact is — this woman can only receive her own blood; no other human blood on Earth is compatible with hers! This unique blood group has recently been recognized by the world’s leading blood science organization, ISBT (International Society of Blood Transfusion) and they also stated that it is the 48th blood group system in the world’s history.
