Sanda Lizard: The small and spiny inhabitant of the desert

Have you ever come across a Sanda lizard? This small and spiny inhabitant of the desert in India and Pakistan is often wrongly assumed to have similar appearance to Monitor lizards due to some viral social media misunderstandings. These resilient reptiles adore desert environment where they usually dig sunken cozy homes up to 2 meters deep. That’s why, they’re found in deserts, wadis, holes, and crevices of the Middle East countries. They may resemble chameleons or monitor lizards; still, their biology separates them from these reptiles. Sanda’s fat is a renowned illegal traditional medicine. So, these creatures are hunted in the Middle East countries often by the locals for delicacy, although it’s considered illegal. As a result, Sanda lizards are being wiped out by the demand and unprotection.
